Art Nouveau in Nederland
The exhibition brings together masterpieces from the period 1884-1914; from furniture, textiles and ceramics to drawings, fashion and paintings. The Dutch Art Nouveau occupies a unique place in this international movement around 1900; Dutch designers and (ornamental) artists created their own variant, which, in contrast to the flamboyant French-Belgian presidency, had to be in line with the alleged sober Dutch mentality. Under the umbrella themes ‘back to nature’, ‘back to the craft’ and ‘inspiration from exotic cultures’ the exhibition places the various art disciplines in the context of their time. In addition, the Gemeentemuseum shows a number of unknown female artists, so that the museum expands and deepens the current image of the Art Nouveau in the Netherlands.
